Just haven’t been able to keep up with this blog. Maybe someday…
Ok, so I failed. I’m no good at twitter. Or I just don’t care about twitter. After my ambitious post about twitter claimed that I’d try to update it every day, I never updated it once. Oh well.
But after thinking about it, I’m not bummed out or embarrassed by my twitterfail. It’s ok because I’m also not very good at updating my facebook profile either.
To a certain degree Mark Cuban’s Philosophy on Education is something that I can live with. Sometimes I agree with Mark, and sometimes I don’t; but since he’s a billionaire and I’m nobody, it probably doesn’t matter what I think. In his blog post Mark responds to a college student who is having a hard time focusing on what he should do with his life (although I find the adventure addiction thing a bit contrived). Mark’s advice is pretty basic: be a sponge and learn everything that you possibly can about business, but don’t focus on anything in particular.
I’ll be honest, I tried Twitter back in the summer of 2008 and it just didn’t stick. For some reason, I just couldn’t find a way to get into it and use it for all my critical communication needs. Since I’m also a failed blogger, I’m not surprised by my complete inability to get hooked on the whole idea of constantly broadcasting myself. I’m also not very good at updating my facebook status either, but that’s a conversation for another day…
So since I joined Twitter in August 2008, it has become this HUGE thing that everybody thinks will change the world. The problem is, it hasn’t changed me. Maybe I’m not receptive to change and as a professional search marketer I don’t want to see another platform creep into my corner of the marketing suite. Some pundits like Robert Scoble believe that if you’re not a hardcore twitter user you should be taken out back and shot (or put out on an ice flow), but I’m not sure he’s right.
My question is this: How does twitter make my life better? I don’t care if it makes the world a better place or not, and I’m not going to investigate what it does to our collective attention spans or ability to digest complex and lengthy treatises on political economy. Those topics are not relevant. All I care about is whether or not twitter improves my life.
So here’s what I”m going to do: I’ve fired up my twitter account again and I’m going to try to use twitter every day for a while to see what happens.
BTW- You can find me on twitter @bittermarketer
Been a while, over a year actually. Well, since I’m trying to set up a photo portfolio site for the wife, I’ve jumped back into the wordpress world. Time to step it up a notch and get iseetrees.com rolling like a pro site.
Thats how the Brits say “One Billion”. They refer to One Trillion as “One Thousand Billion”. Shouldn’t that really be “One Million Million”?
Anyway, Do you think this economic “recovery” package will cost us One Million Million? I hope not. Hopefully the “war” in Iraq doesn’t end up costing us Three Million Million…
I looked at my old checkbook balance from December 12th, 1996: $75.26. In the end these are just numbers.
I’m tired of Facebook.
I’m tired of people who I haven’t seen in 16 years finding me and wanting to be friends. Its especially weird when we weren’t even friends 16 years ago. I’ve decided to start ignoring a lot of people.
I’m tired of L’il Green Patch. Its a good cause (i think), but I’m done with it.
Don’t poke me; don’t super poke me; and don’t uber super poke me. I might kick you in the teeth in response.
But seriously, Facebook has become just as spammy as every other application out there. Email spam begat search results spam begat social network spam. SPAM. Its just that if a “friend” sends it to me, its not really spam, because some how my friends can’t “spam” me. Well, I call bullshit on that. Ever have a friend who’s one of those wackjobs in an MLM (pyramid) scheme? They spam you face to face with their spammy junk. They just don’t do it online. So has Facebook become one giant pyramid scheme? Maybe, I don’t know for sure, but its starting to bother me.
An old colleague has a great blog post about Facebook that follows the evolution of a social network. I think he nails it… I’m already looking for something else.
BTW… if you want to buy me a drink, I’ll be in the bar.
If you are ever asked to join the Board of Directors of a non-profit organization, you should say yes. Just don’t complain later.
From March 2008
I’m currently reading Eric Clapton’s recently published auto-biography. For the most part, he spends the majority of his time discussing his passion for music (over fame), the various bands and musicians that he played with, and his penchant for alcohol and mind altering substances.
However, at one point while discussing the famous line “Clapton is God” that was graffiti’d in the London tube in the late 60’s he succinctly summarizes word of mouth marketing:
“But, another part of me thought the “Clapton is God” thing was really quite nice. I’d been ousted by the Yardbirds, and they’d brought in Jeff Beck. They immediately had a string of hits, and I was quite put out by that, so any kind of accolade that came from just playing, without selling myself or promoting myself on TV, was welcome. There’s something about word-of-mouth that you cannot undo. In truth, I felt grateful about it because it gave me status, and, even better, it was the kind of status that nobody could tamper with. After all, you can’t muck around with graffiti. It comes from the street.”
